They stop and hinder the power of God in our lives. They torment our minds and wreak havoc in our emotions. They cause strongholds such as GLUTTONY, SMOKING, PERVERSION, ADULTERY, LUST, PORNOGRAPHY, TORMENTING THOUGHTS, OCCULT, FEAR, ANXIETY, UNCONTROLLABLE ANGER, BITTERNESS, SELF-PITY and countless others. Have you tried to be set free from a bondage yet have not yet gotten the victory? If you have prayed, fasted and done all that you can to be set free then you probably need deliverance. Deliverance is simply the casting out of demons. NO ONE should cast out a demon unless they are a born-again Christian. THE Word of God tells us that “Once the house is swept clean…” (Luke 11:25) the demons always try to come back. If they find an “empty” house they return with 7 times the amount of demons. What this means is that once the demon is cast out you must fill yourself with good and powerful things of God such as the Word of God, prayer, spiritual songs, etc. If you do not do this the demons will destroy you. I have seen this happen and it is a terrible thing. NEVER bring someone through deliverance that isn’t saved and does not understand how to “walk out the deliverance.” There could be serious consequences and you will be responsible. If you are not comfortable casting out a demon then find a deliverance minister that is reputable. He or she should be Godly, sincere, humble and very knowledgeable of the Word of God. If you keep asking around you will find someone who will help you. Casting out of demons should be a normal part of the Christian life. Jesus said in Mark 16:17 “These signs shall follow them that believe and are Christians, in my name they shall cast out demons…” Jesus was telling his disciples that every powerful Christian should understand and take authority over demons that many people might be set free. I have been involved with deliverance for 35 years. It is because of deliverance that I was set free from gluttony, perversion, occult practices, bitterness, unforgiveness and numerous other demonic oppressions. Deliverance is powerful and it works. Study what the Word of God tells you about the authority you have in Christ. Memorize powerful bible verses. Put on the Armor of God. You must not have any fear of the demonic realm when you cast out demons. Otherwise the demons can sense it and will not submit to your authority. When you feel you are strong in Christ you are then ready to begin deliverance. Here is how it works. Pick a day when the house will be quiet. Shut off all phones. Find a quiet room without interruptions. You will need about an hour of time. You will lay hands on yourself or the person and say “I recognize that there is a spirit of Gluttony (or whatever) in me. I do not want it and it no longer has any power over me. I tell you that you will not act up. This will be a quiet deliverance and nothing will happen that is out of control. I now command you to leave in the name and authority of Jesus.” At first you may feel nothing. Remember, demons don’t have a home unless they invade a person’s body. They do not want to leave. You must be strong and confident. You will repeat the same command. Then you will begin to say “You must leave by the blood of the Lamb.” Satan and the demons fear the blood of Jesus. When they hear this they cower. Keep repeating this with a loud, firm voice. Repeat it until you see that the person is about to be set free. They will feel “Like something is about to leave them”, almost as if they had a big, spiritual burp. This could take up to 20 minutes. Don’t give up. Keep the deliverance quiet. We NEVER allow demons to yell, scream, act out or become violent. We are always in control. Now, if the demon chooses to leave with a scream that is permitted, but only for a minute, no more. We keep the atmosphere quiet, calm and under control. There is nothing “scary” that is allowed to happen. We work with God and God is in control – not the demons. Demons must physically leave your body. I always tell them “You will leave through the mouth.” This means that they have no choice but to obey and leave by coughing or phlegm. Your first few times of deliverance will probably go slow. Don’t be discouraged. You have the power and authority – they don’t. Be persistent. Keep telling the demon or demons that they are not wanted and they must go. They will try to “hide.” They will try to make you think this is all your imagination – don’t be sidetracked. Have resolve. Keep commanding the demon to go. Can you physically feel a demon leaving? Sometimes a person will feel more than others. Oftentimes it will be a feeling of wanting to throw up, gag, pressure in the chest or back, headaches, dizziness or nausea. One woman who was bound up with a Spirit of Gluttony felt hundreds of little spiders crawling off her hair. Oftentimes a person will feel absolutely nothing and be totally set free. This is where you need to test the waters by waiting a few days to see if the “problem” is still there. Monitor your thoughts or the persons thoughts. I often will ask “What are you feeling?” Often the person will tell me “I feel like something is stuck in my throat.” This tells me that the demon is starting to leave but is fighting. This is good. I then say “You demon of __________ I see that you are in Karen’s throat. You cannot hide. You will not cause her to choke. Your powers were broken at the cross 20000 years ago – COME OUT NOW IN JESUS NAME!” I don’t yell and scream. I don’t make a scene. I speak loudly and firmly. Demons are not deaf. Keep repeating this until you start to feel that the demon is physically leaving. Some signs of a demon leaving are a headache, back pain or a feeling like something is about to release. When stuck: When you have spent 10 – 20 minutes and nothing is happening then you are at a blockage. You or the person may need inner-healing (see all posts under Balm of Gilead). Stop the deliverance and bring the person through the inner-healing necessary. Often times deliverance cannot occur until the person has healing for past wounds which opened up the door to the sin, the perversion, the addiction. Take your time with this as it is critical. How do you know there is deliverance? A person may start coughing for several minutes. That is the demon leaving. They may begin to sneeze, cry or feel their ears pop. Oftentimes when it seems like the process is too slow (longer than 10 minutes) I speed up the process. I don’t have all day. I tell the demon “You are coming out NOW in Jesus name.” I then tell the person to begin to cough for several minutes. I usually always have complete success. The coughing is the way to begin the process and then as the demon leaves the person begins to hack and cough naturally as the demon leaves through the persons mouth. Why do they cough, hack, sneeze or otherwise? This is because the demon entered physically and must leave physically, so they will cause the body to react in various ways. Who cares how they leave as long as the demon leaves. What to do when a demon won’t leave. Often times a person really wants an addiction. I have seen this several times when I have brought people through for deliverance from cigarette smoking. I stop and ask the person “Do you really want to quit?” Oftentimes the person will say “No.” or “I’m not sure.” This is when I stop the deliverance. A demon always stays where he is welcome. He will never leave when a person wants to keep the addiction. This is where there needs to be more one-on-one counseling, healing and prayer. Anyone who needs to keep an addiction needs to find a new identity and release the fear of living without the addiction. How to tell if deliverance is complete. Let’s say the person began coughing for several minutes. Ask them “How do you feel? What are you thinking?” If they say “I feel peaceful. There is nothing in my mind.” Then you have most likely had a successful deliverance. At that moment pray and ask the Holy Spirit to fill the voids the demons once occupied. Spend a few moments in prayer and praise to God. Then remind the person that they MUST fill themselves with good and godly things – reading and memorizing God’s Word, Christian teachings and fellowship, Christian music. Tell them to not open the door to the demonic realm by being involved with anything ungodly – such as perverted movies, books, magazines, the occult, ungodly relationships and immoral behavior. Let the person know that if they do not guard their hearts and minds the demons WILL come back and torment them worse than before. Finally, the best way to know that you have been set free is to wait a few days and see how your mind feels and if the addiction or temptation comes back. Deliverance is immediate. If you are free you feel like a new person. You may still have temptations but this time you will have power to overcome. Be sure to read my next post on How to Walk out Your Deliverance. This is crucial. Deliverance is a wonderful and powerful gift from the Lord. It has set many free from countless torments of the mind and addictions. My prayer is that it will become a normal part of your Christian walk.
